Custom Closet Dream Design…
If you’re thinking about designing a custom closet before swapping out your winter wardrobe, spring is a wonderful time to organize your clothing and accessories and envision what you can do with your space. Whether you’re converting an unused room into a luxurious walk-in closet or redesigning an existing closet, you can customize its storage to make your morning routine more efficient and peaceful.
First, take inventory and eliminate anything you don’t need to store in your new custom closet. Your goal is to have adequate storage space for organizing so that everything has a visible home. If you have a blazer you only wear once a year, don’t put it back into your newly renovated closet. You will not want to waste valuable inches with things you never use.
Make Your Custom Closet Function for the Way You Live
Begin by sizing rods for high-hanging items such as dresses and slacks and positioning low/high bars for shirts and skirts. Take the measuring tape out and plan appropriately sized shelves or cubbies for shoes, boots hats, and bags. When designing custom closet drawers, be sure to include narrow and deep drawers sized specifically for the items that will be going in them. Narrow drawers work well for jewelry trays and for partitioning undergarments and socks. A dressing island can offer tremendous additional storage, and its countertop is perfect for laying things out while deciding. Other options we like to include are in-cabinet lighting, valet rods, drawer locks, a built-in hamper, and pull out towers for scarves, belts, ties, and shoes. If your closet is tall, a pull-down clothing rod will optimize the vertical space making high garments easier to reach.
Make every inch of closet space usable and functional. Function is always first. Try not to layer things. You want to be able to see everything as best you can. At our house, we learned a trick for folding T-shirts in half so that when the drawer is open, you can see every one. I posted the video at the bottom of this post. With some creative planning, you can design the best possible scenario for your custom closet. Here are some ideas and new features including LED lighting in back panels and rods.
