Don’t Forget About the Kitchen Ceiling
Ceilings are often forgotten in the scheme of decorating a room, but that square footage has so much design potential to offer your space. Molding, trim, wallpaper, and paint techniques can add tremendous interest to the room. Crown molding will give the illusion of height if you have a lower ceiling. In rooms with higher ceilings, we often use tray or coffered ceilings to make the space cozier.
Use Paint Effects
Try painting the molding a different color than the ceiling to draw attention to the detail and make it a little more dramatic. Even a slight shade darker or lighter will create a wonderful effect. Think about how the entire space is going to make you feel when you are in it. Sometimes the smallest details can have the greatest impact.
What a Great Kitchen Ceiling Can Do
A great kitchen ceiling design can give the room unique character. This client’s love of peacocks drove the decision to have an artist come in and create a hand-painted peacock feather on the ceiling. The space became warmer by converting their vaulted ceiling to a 9-foot flat ceiling and adding a taller tray ceiling over the island. This gave them the height they loved while adding a better proportion to the room. See this Dix Hills, NY kitchen project here.
Try Coffered
This coffered kitchen ceiling detail creates a strong architectural statement balanced beautifully against the dark floors. We designed this kitchen for a wonderful family in Oyster Bay Cove.
Be Creative
You can be creative with the sunken panels on a coffered ceiling by painting them a darker shade or by adding wallpaper, metal or wood. See this Garden City kitchen project here.
Add Texture
If you’re looking to add some texture, a tongue and groove ceiling is a nice option for a clean, sophisticated look with fabulous lighting. See this Southampton kitchen here.
